Tutorial Part 5/8

Hello dear player,

it's me again. Today, I want to tell you about armies. To protect your land from orcs, undead and other players, you should consider building a drill ground. You can build one when you have research level 1 of Art of Battle.

When it is completed and visible in your town, you can access a new screen. You can create armies by recruiting part of your population and assigning them to different units.

The battle system is very complex and allows you to gain advantage by using tactics and skill. There are three basic types of armies (respectively army parts). Artillery, cavalry and infantry. You can only create artillery in bigger towns with barracks, so we'll leave that one out for now. For infantry as well as for cavalry there are about 60 different weapons which have varying requirements. Two-handed weapons for example can only be wielded by infantry, lances only by cavalry, just to mention two. Cavalry is limited to short bows while infantry can use all types of bows. Heavily armored troops travel slower than light armies.

Generally, all equipments can combined freely. Certain combinations have advantages, however. This works pretty much the same way as it would in the real world.

If you start assembling armies, you will lose the protection of the gods and should prepare for skirmishes with non-human races. Particularly dangerous are dragons. Only big armies and long expeditions will take these beasts out. Especially red dragons, which are thankfully rare, are known to even destroy towns. Be careful!

The terrain also plays a role in the outcome of a fight. Cavalry will find themselves encumbered in forest, but can play out their strengths in open plains. Infantries, on the other hand, fight best in forests and towns and are the only ones who can enter swamps. Artilleries are best used to attack towns and runs them to the ground.

There is hardly anything that is not taken into account in the Tamar battle system. Imagine your own tactics and see how your armies do!

Let me mention that the smallest possible unit is 50 men. If a unit drops under that limit, it will desert and take all weapons and armor with them. So you should try to avoid that.

Also keep in mind that annexing an acre of land amounts to fighting the inhabitants for control. So an actually fight takes place, with the difference that there will be no report. Either is has worked or not.

No rule without exception. Annexing a town basically means besieging the town people and all present armies. You will find town much harder to take over than open land. Part of the reason for that is that a quarter of the town people will form a milita to defend themselves. Just try calculating what this would mean for your own towns.

Assuming you have 10,000 people in your realm and 5,000 in your town, this would amount to a defending milita of 1,250 men. This is more than you can even recruit.

Of course, such a milita is not equipped as well and should be defeated by a well equipped army of the same size. If you wan to be a warrior, there is only one way to find out: Try!

So much about armies for now. There are many more rule to the battle system. But you have learned the basics now. Try asking for (or buying) information from Lord that have fought wars before.
