20.10.2006 - Be the 250.000th visitor and win a game!

Dear Reader,

for other Websites it wouldn`t be something big. For us it`s a milestone. Shortly we will pass the 250.000 visitors mark and for this cause we will organize a little competition.

The person which is the 250.000th visitor of http://www.tamar.net, and the first one who sends us the codeword which is displayed instead of the visitorcounter, gets a complete Starter-Set with 150 turns (half a year of playtime) as price.

Please send the codeword including your own adress to competition@tamar.net

Tales of Tamar, the internet based strategy- and roleplaying game with unique features, is looking forward to your visit.

27.10.2006 - Trading with elves and dwarves

Tales of Tamar, the Internet based strategy- and roleplaying game now has a new feature:

So far all computer races were only enemies in the game, now it's possible to trade with elves and dwarves and get precious and unique weapons and armour from them.

Because elves and dwarves are still interested in a balanced Tamar, they are a little peculiar and will only offer these weapons and armour to the smaller Lords and Ladies of Tamar.

So all new realms now have the opportunity to obtain unique items and either trade them against other useful goods, or to use them in war to become successful even faster.

Tales of Tamar now with module player!

In the newest version, besides the well known soundtrack of the base set, Tales of Tamar now also includes a built-in module player to provide the downloadable version of the client with music, retro-style.

Download the latest version and activate music ("use module") in the first option screen. The system is backward compatible down to Windows 95, requires very little CPU (no MP3s) and uses less diskspace than simple WAV files.

27.06.2006 - ToT PC 0.53

Finally, after two months of bug testing, we are proud to present Tales of Tamar HiRes 2D for Windows PCs!

The new client for our massively multiplayer strategy and roleplaying game now uses a resolution of 1024x768 pixels in 15, 16 and 32 bit color depth as well as the legacy mode with 640x480 pixel in 8 bit for users with older computers.

Tales of Tamar has always supported all hardware from a Pentium 200 MHz up to the most recent systems, but now also takes advantage of the power of more recent machines.

You can find a gallery of screenshots at Screenshots

As you can see there, a 3D HiRes map is already being worked on, and we will update this page to reflect new developments.

Now to the new features and bugfixes:
  • added HiRes mode
  • 24 bit color depth added
  • autoconverting of 8 bit graphics
  • pressing ESC in the residence screen takes you back to the title screen
  • input handler rewritten
  • ftp download doesn't lock the system anymore
  • map speed improved
  • loading of graphics improved on certain systems
  • names on the map stay visible while scrolling
  • new language catalogs added
Bugfixes:
  • ftp code improved in several places
  • many other bugs fixed
Update from any previous installed version:

The base archive for new players:

Path : http://www.tamar.net/bin/ToT_PC_V0.53.exe
Size: 25.921.695 Bytes

The new 2D HiRes map is an integral part of the coming 3D map, which is being implemented on the Windows version now. Adding HiRes support was an important step towards this.

What's coming next?

For future development, we are still looking for skilled people wanting to earn some money on part time jobs.

We are looking for:
  • Pixel artists, for designing 2D hexagons and improving the GUI
  • 3D object designers and texture designers
  • translators into Portuguese
  • PHP programmers to help with the browser based client

06.05.2006 - ToT Amiga 0.55 R1

It is done!

Finally, after 8 months of work, we are proud to present Tales of Tamar in HiRES 2D!

The new client of our massively multiplayer strategy and roleplaying game is running at a resolution of 1024*768 with double buffering in 15 bit, 16 and 32 bit, as well as the usual 640*480/8 bit.

Therefore, Tales of Tamar is working on all Amiga systems starting with an A1200 with 030 accelerator board up to the most recent systems and also takes advantage of the faster hardware of Amithlon, AmigaOne, Pegasos or UAE setups.

A few (older) screenshots can be found here:

http://www.tamar.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=6717

The engine has been improved meanwhile, of course.

Unfortunately, Amiga computers are reaching their limits here. To use the HiRES map, a 060 processor and a fast graphics card is required. If your system doesn't meet the requirements, you can always go back to 640*480, though.

Our experiences regarding speed are as follows:

A1200 AGA
640*480/8bit = yes
1024*768/15bit =no
1024*768/16bit =no
1024*768/32bit =no

AGA cannot display 1024*768 and would be too slow anyway.

A500/A1200/A2000/A3000/ graphics card/ 030 or 040
640*480/8bit = yes
1024*768/15bit =no
1024*768/16bit =no
1024*768/32bit =no

The processor is to slow for the HiRES map.

A500/A1200/A2000/A3000/ 4 MB graphics card ZII/ 060
640*480/8bit = yes
1024*768/15bit =yes/no
1024*768/16bit =yes/no
1024*768/32bit =no

The map is working in 15 or 16 bit, but is not particularly fast, since the speed is limited by the Zorro-II bus. 32 bit does not work due to insuffient graphics memory.

A1200/A3000/A4000 4 MB graphics card ZIII/ 060
640*480/8bit = yes
1024*768/15bit =yes/no
1024*768/16bit =yes/no
1024*768/32bit =no

The HiRES map works in 15/16 bit with a well maintained and optimized OS installed.

A3000/A4000 >=8 MB graphics card PCI/ 060 + PPC
640*480/8bit = yes
1024*768/15bit =yes/no
1024*768/16bit =yes/no
1024*768/32bit =yes/no

The HiRES map is working, but is not particularly fast. Usable with a well maintained and optimized OS.

Pegasos/AmigaOne/WinUAE/Amithlon
640*480/8bit = yes
1024*768/15bit =yes
1024*768/16bit =yes
1024*768/32bit =yes

Only time will show if these results can be improved, but this probably won't happen without using Assembler, and it is doubtful is the support for the project is big enough to justify the effort.

After our last call for testers, we found about 40 users, of which only a small fraction actually tested. So if you want to see the project maintained on the Amiga, join us and help. Otherwise, we may not be able to root out all the bugs.

Now the new features and bugfixes:

New features:
  • HiRES mode activated
  • 24 bit support added
  • auto conversion of 8 bit graphics added
  • Esc in the residence exists to the title screen now
  • Input-Handler rewritten
  • Works with OS4 Pre 4
  • FTP-Download doesn't block the mouse anymore
  • map screen optimized
  • ToT uses expansion.library to determine whether it runs on a OS4 Classic system or an AmigaOne (thanks to Stephan Rupprecht!)
  • faster laoding on some systems
  • text labels don't disappear when scrolling
  • large code parts on the map support ppc, unfortunately no great improvements in speed with WarpOS
  • numbers of workers don't disappear when scrolling
  • new catalogs
Bugfixes:
  • FTP-Code improved and fixed
  • Workaround for MOS-BlitBug in CGX V5 added
  • WarpUp unter OS4 deaktivated, since itwas actually slower than 68k emulation
  • many other bugs fixed
known bugs:
  • packed24 modes don't work
  • possible font errors under OS4 (reason yet unknown)
  • CGX V4 ColorFonts >8bit don't support transparence
  • CGX V3 hasn't been tested, possibly color errors (we need testers for this!)
  • module player could have issues under OS4 (again, we need testers for this)

The current 2D HiRES map is an important step towards the coming 3D map, which is currently implemented on the PC version, to avoid both incompatibilities and delays due to missing testers. This was an important step for us.
Now a few personal words: The 2D HiRES map is my very own "thank you" to the Amiga computer, which has been with me for the bigger part of my life so far. For now, it will mark the crowning achievement for the game, and further development can only take place if we can find enough players to keep the game alive.

The HiRES 3D map will be a step at least as big as the 2D map, and is simply required to have a lot of testers to make it work. Just one example: We have only had 2 or 3 really active testers for OS4. As a result, bugs that are not obvious will be found late or not at all. We hope that the support from the Amiga community will improve little in the future.

My thanks go to Stephan Rupprecht with whom I had long dicussions on the how and why of blitting which resulted in better and smoother performance of ToT. Thank you, Stephan! You weren't enthused but still you listened, for weeks on end.

Thanks to Wolfgang Vogel for his PPC board, since mine were both broken again. I wouldn't have been able to finish this version without it.

Also thanks to Frank Mariak, who was always helpful about CGX problems. I hope CGX will see some new developments again.

I would also like to thank the whole OS4 team and the MOS team for their support.

What will be next?

The HiRES 2D map has been ported to the PC, where is will be tested some more and then released as well.

The Mac version will takeover the finished sources and also implement the HiRES map.

We signed a contract with a new programmer, Richard Drummond, who will work on ToT for Linux PPC and x86 and possibly Zeta. Richard has been working on OS4 before, and has already completed a first version of ToT for Linux. He has received the sources for the HiRES map as well and will try adapt the Linux version for it.

Last but not least, we found a known and capable author. She has looked into the history of Arbanor and will write a book about Tales of Tamar. With this, we are picking up an idea from the last millenium.

However, we are still looking for help to speed up development, in particular:
  • pixel artists, for 2D map hexagons and GUI improvements
  • 3D object designer and texture artists
  • assembler programmers to optimized the 68k code
  • musicians for digibooster/fasttracker modules
  • translators for portuguese
  • PHP programmers to support the browser version
  • programmers to improve the Amiga Installer script

09.02.2006 - Tamar needs new land

Tamar in the fall of the year 607

The political situation on Tamar is uncertain like never before. Just as the last big war, fought between the Dragonblood Alliance, the Northern League and the Order, seemed to be decided, one of the biggest sovereigns by the name of Roderich, son of Albarich, resigns and leaves a lot of questions unanswered.

The battles, however, continue. From the south, the hordes of the barbarians approach and put the the people on the continent Elerion in jeopardy. And the remaining members of the once so mighty Order keep fighting to stay alive. Where are the times and the allies of the once so glorious emperor Guother?

But while old Tamar and Elerion are caught up in their own feuds, a new danger rises in the East. According to ancient prophecies, a "death demon" called Ankou will rise every 1000 years and take control of a human host.

If the civilised countries should underestimate this danger, it may very well mean the end of the world as we know it.

Meanwhile, in the far east of Elerion, new realms settle and form new alliances.

The hunt for new land is on! Our rare event: "Tamar needs new land" is in progress as of now. Start now for free and found a new realm!

Explore regions of Tamar no human eye has seen before. Meet unique challenges such as dragons, undead and other creatures. Show that you can stand your ground against other human players.

Tip 1:
The reward of 500,- Euro for the first emperor of Tamar who has founded his realm after January 1st 2005 is still not claimed. It could be you! (Details can be found in the Quest section of our forum)

Tip 2:
When registering a new game, enter the keyword 'Trial' instead of a serial number and you can try the game for free. A turn fee will only apply when you've had a chance to develop your realm.

Tip 3:
Mac and Linux versions of the client are playing on the same world as everyone else. We are still looking for beta testers for these two systems.

Enjoy your stay on Tamar!
Best Regards,

the ToT team
